The main campus of the university is adjacent to Interstate 81 in the City of Winchester, Virginia in the historic Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The university's physical plant consists of 25 buildings including eight residence halls (800 beds), two leased facilities on the campus of the Winchester Medical Center, and another leased facility on the Northern Virginia campus in Leesburg, Virginia, approximately 45 miles east of Winchester. The university campus includes the Alson H. Smith, Jr. Library. Open 96 hours per week, the university, through a variety of online subscriptions, provides round-the-clock access to significant virtual collections which are accessible from both on-campus and off-campus with authentication through a proxy server. A web-based online catalog is always available. The off-campus Health Sciences Library is open 76 hours per week. Physical library collections consist of 131, 174 books, bound journals and music scores, 700 print periodical subscriptions, 134, 485 units of microfilm, and 19, 043 audio and video recordings. Virtual resources include about 82 databases, providing access to online reference books or to the journal literature. Library users have access to more than 22, 000 e-journals, either as stand-alone subscriptions or as part of an aggregate database. Moreover, approximately 10, 500 virtual CDs are part of the Naxos Music Library. All academic programs are supported by these collections. Shenandoah participates with several consortia, and these memberships have an impact of library collections and to some extent on services: VIVA (The Virtual Library of Virginia; VICULA (The Virginia Independent College and University Library Association); SOLINET (the regional network for the libraries in the southeastern US); SVILC (the Shenandoah Valley Independent Library Cooperative); and James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia which has agreed to reciprocal borrowing with Shenandoah University. Shenandoah University is comprised of 6 academic schools or colleges: (1) the School of Health Professions offering associate, baccalaureate and master's degrees, and post-master's certificates; (2) the Harry F. Byrd, Jr. , School of Business offering certificate programs and baccalaureate and master's degrees; (3) the College of Arts and Sciences offering baccalaureate degrees; (4) Shenandoah Conservatory offering certificate programs, baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees; (5) the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy offering doctoral degrees, and (6) the newly established School of Education and Human Development offering certificates, master's and doctoral degrees. In addition to 22 undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate certificates, the university offers six undergraduate degrees, nine master's degrees, and four doctoral degrees. In choosing a major, students may select from among 72 programs of study. The university employs 185 full-time faculty members, 161 part-time faculty members, 231 full-time administrative personnel and 62 part-time administrative personnel. Approximately 85% of the full-time faculty members hold doctorates or other terminal degrees in their area of specialty and approximately 7% of the full-time faculty members are tenured. The overall undergraduate faculty-student ratio is 1: 8.
