St. Mary's University, is a Catholic and Marianist liberal arts institution located on a 135-acre campus northwest of downtown San Antonio. The University is a nationally recognized master's level school. French brothers and priests of the Society of Mary (the Marianists) brought Catholic education to San Antonio, when, in 1852, they opened St. Mary's Institute on Military Plaza downtown for 12 students. From these humble beginnings, St. Mary's has flourished to include more than 3, 900 students of all faiths and backgrounds. St. Mary's is dedicated to the Marianist ideals of academic excellence, ethical commitment and community service. Personal attention and powerful academic programs have made St. Mary's an educational leader for high academic standards and student success. St. Mary's is home to five schools: Bill Greehey School of Business; Humanities and Social Sciences; Science, Engineering and Technology; the Graduate School; and the School of Law, the only Catholic law school in Texas. St. Mary's 184 full-time faculty members, 92 percent of whom hold doctoral or terminal degrees in their field, are committed to student achievement in and out of the classroom. A student / faculty ratio of 13: 1 permits small classes and close association between students and professors. St. Mary's academic programs include 44 undergraduate majors in traditional liberal arts and sciences, in addition to pre-professional programs in medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, allied health and law.
