Defiance College offers undergraduate students an engaged learning experience that is unique among colleges and universities. Nationally recognized for its successful efforts to implement a model of civic engagement and service learning, Defiance is home to the McMaster School for Advancing Humanity, a unique research program serving as a focal point for teaching, service, scholarship, and action to improve the human condition worldwide. This past year students participated in international projects in Cambodia, Belize, Guatemale, Israel and Palestine. In addition, more than 30 DC students traveled to New Orleans to assist with efforts to rebuild communities devasted by Hurricane Katrina. Others helped build homes with Habitat for Humanity. Student athletes participated in more than 2, 000 hours of community service including such projects as mentoring local youngsters in after-school programs, volunteering as athletic trainers at the Empire State Games, and working at a community center in inner-city Detroit. The Student Social Work Organization hosted the annual Empty Bowls Dinner and raised $3, 600 for the local PATH Center. Putting a long-standing rivalry aside, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee raised more than $3, 400 to present to the Bluffton University Baseball Memorial Fund after a tragic accident killed five members of the baseball team. Defiance College is an area resource for numerous intellectual and cultural activities including the Schomburg lecture and concert series, Trends for Tomorrow business conference, Defiance College Community Band concerts, DC Players theatrical performances, and Yellow Jacket sports events.
