| Mission | |
| School mission | One of the few master's level public regional universities in the nation with a Rhodes scholar, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire prepares its students to compete with students from higher educational institutions throughout the nation for prestigious awards, top graduate schools and desirable jobs. In recent years, UW-Eau Claire has had more students receive Fulbright grants than most master's level schools in the country. UW-Eau Claire is a national leader among comprehensive universities in the number of chemistry graduates earning Ph.D.s, and it ranks near the top 25 percent nationwide in the number of accounting students who pass the CPA exam the first time. In the last year, four faculty have been named Fulbright scholars. UW-Eau Claire is one of just four undergraduate institutions in the country to have four or more Dreyfus teacher-scholar winners on its faculty. In recent years, several science and mathematics faculty have received substantial grant awards from the National Science Foundation, while history and education faculty have secured several million dollars through U.S. Department of Education grant programs. UW-Eau Claire's nationally recognized undergraduate student-faculty research program provides research opportunities often available only to graduate students at large institutions. At any time, more than 800 students in disciplines across campus are involved in research with faculty. An example of recent research is the creation of prototype mathematical models and software to help communities better plan for emergencies, a project inspired by Hurricane Katrina. Research often is published in prestigious journals, such as in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Our music program features faculty and students who perform worldwide, with venues ranging from orchestra halls to the Vatican. UW-Eau Claire provides students with experiences that will help them succeed in a global economy. We offer programs that allow students to study, live and work in international settings, as well as programs that bring international students to campus. UW-Eau Claire sends more students abroad than any other master's level institution in Wisconsin, and it ranks 14th nationally among all master's schools in the number of students who study abroad. Almost 25 percent of our students study abroad, choosing from programs in more than 30 countries. More than 70 percent of those students live abroad for a semester or more, giving them an understanding of local cultures and strong connections to people who live in the regions. An increasing number of students are receiving scholarships through competitive programs that enable them to study and conduct research abroad, and more students are completing internships and student teaching in international settings. UW-Eau Claire is the only public university in northwestern and north central Wisconsin that offers a baccalaureate nursing degree. The program graduates more than 100 students a year, many of whom receive multiple job offers from health care organizations in Wisconsin and beyond. The university is one of just a handful of public regional universities in the country--and the only one in Wisconsin--to include service-learning as part of its graduation requirements. Each year about 2,000 students generate more than 100,000 community-service hours. It's estimated that the value of students' service totals more than $1.5 million a year. For the second year, UW-Eau Claire was recognized for its outstanding community service programs by a federal agency charged with fostering an ethic of volunteerism and service in America. UW-Eau Claire was named in the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for General Community Service. This year, UW-Eau Claire became a signatory to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, a step toward becoming "climate neutral" and reducing greenhouse gases. |
