| Mission | |
| School mission | Vanderbilt is comprised of ten undergraduate, graduate and professional schools situated on 330 acres. The university's compact academic geography is part of what makes it so remarkable and balanced. This close proximity means collaborations and partnerships are the rule at Vanderbilt, rather than the exception. Civility and collegiality have always distinguished Vanderbilt, an institution where people openly discuss and debate ideas in an atmosphere of trust. Students learn the importance of truly listening and learning from others, and they leave the university carrying these qualities into the wider world. This learning starts as soon as first year students move into the Commons, Vanderbilt's first year living and learning environment. The Commons includes five recently renovated and five newly constructed residence halls, which will allow the university to (for the first time in its history) house all freshmen in the same area of campus. Each residence hall (or "house") will also have a faculty member in residence, who will serve as a mentor to students and oversee programming for the house. |
