| Mission | |
| School mission | The College of Staten Island offers selective academic programs to students ranging from the Macaulay Honors College: University Scholars Program, which provides high-achieving students with a special honors curriculum of innovative and challenging courses during the first and second years of study, to FIRST, a program designed to provide learning communities that help academically well-prepared students develop a sense of belonging to CSI. The Teacher Academy at CSI, designed for select students interested in careers teaching science or math, is The City University of New York's unique contribution to the NYC Partnership for Teacher Excellence. CSI's newest distinguished program, The Verrazano School, opened in spring 2007 for students with high academic profiles. Designed to provide an outstanding educational opportunity for academically gifted students, the Macaulay Honors College at CSI offers a challenging undergraduate experience shaped by the combined resources of CUNY and New York City. Special features include full financial support, interdisciplinary seminars focusing on New York City and access to instructional technology, mentors, internships, and study abroad opportunities. In addition, a Cultural Passport provides entry to New York's vast cultural resources. FIRST is an innovative program that was initiated at CSI in the spring of 2003 for students who have passed or are exempt from all three freshman skills tests. The FIRST program is designed to provide a small learning community environment that helps students develop a sense of belonging to CSI by building relationships with faculty, peer mentors, and other key personnel who will assist in their academic journeys. In addition, FIRST provides specialized academic and personal support services. The CUNY Teacher Academy at the College of Staten Island offers four years of free tuition and no fees for students who graduate and teach at least two years in New York City public schools; paid internships each year to work with high school or middle school students; one-on-one study opportunities with exceptional faculty in science and mathematics; hands-on experiences in New York City public middle or high schools; a full-time teaching position in a New York City middle school or high school upon successful completion of the entire Teacher Academy program;faculty mentors in education, mathematics and science; a dedicated Teacher Academy space for study, meetings, group projects, and relaxation; a Teacher Academy library of resources for teaching in middle and high school. The College of Staten Island opened the Verrazano School as an extension of the learning communities model that the College debuted in 2003. Of the 2,000 freshmen who enrolled at CSI in 2006, approximately 450 took part in learning communities - groups of 25 to 30 full-time students who take general education classes together in an effort to build a common bond and to help ease the transition to college life. "The Verrazano School is a competitive, selective program that offers students the opportunity to be part of a dynamic, academically-motivated learning community", commented Dr. Michael Kress, interim provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at CSI. "Verrazano Scholars, along with their professors, share experiences and knowledge within a culture of mutual respect and exploration guided by innovation, experimentation, service, and experiential learning." The School requires students take a minimum of two Verrazano classes per semester, fulfilling general college requirements. Verrazano students work more closely with full-time faculty and have the opportunity to conduct a research project hand-in-hand with the faculty member, giving Verrazano Scholars even more of an advantage. These and other competitive programs at the College of Staten Island challenge highly motivated students to reach new academic heights! |
