Mission
School mission Stony Brook's founders made an audacious decision to establish a world-class research university in a single generation. Fewer than 50 years after its founding, Stony Brook has earned a place among the top 2 percent of all the world's Universities according to the London Times Higher Education Supplement. With more than 120 majors and minors for undergraduates, an active research environment, Long Island's only university-based teaching hospital, and innovative programs that prepare you for graduate study and a host of careers, Stony Brook offers you all the advantages of a major university. Our diverse campus attracts more than 22,000 students from all 50 states and 54 countries. But Stony Brook is a large university with a small-college feel. As a freshman, you will belong to one of six Undergraduate Colleges organized around students' interests. Themes include leadership and service; arts, culture and humanities; and science and society. Each Undergraduate College has only 400 students and offers academic and residential advising to help you schedule classes, choose a major, and adjust to college life. You also will have the opportunity to take one-credit themed classes in small-group settings and attend informal gatherings with your professors and fellow students. Stony Brook offers several combined bachelor's/master's degree programs for undergraduates and two new B.S. degree programs in Marine Science and Marine Vertebrate Biology We also now have an exciting new major in journalism. Students in the biomedical engineering major combine their interests in math, chemistry, biology, engineering and computer programming. Student clubs and academic advising support students heading toward careers in law, engineering, medicine, and a range of health professions. Our world-class undergraduate research program offers guidance toward research placements in all of these areas and more wherever your interests lie. Each spring the University pays tribute to students' accomplishments in all the arts and sciences with a day of exhibition and performance. Stony Brook has more than 240 clubs and organizations for students and offers an extensive intramural program. Students, faculty and staff race boats made with only cardboard, duct tape, and paint in the annual Roth Pond Regatta. Other Stony Brook traditions include Homecoming and Strawberry Fest. Our Student Activities Center features a 3,000 square foot fitness center, an international food court, student lounges, game rooms, an art gallery, and a Wellness Center with a mirrored studio for exercise classes and workshops. Membership is free to students. Across campus, the Sports Complex includes courts for basketball and squash, a running track, a dance studio, weight rooms, and a pool. Each residential quad also has its own fully equipped fitness center open 24/7. And the Division I Seawolves compete in a new 8,300 seat stadium. As a graduate of an institution that is a member of the elite Association of American Universities, you will have a degree that is highly valued and recognized. The Wall Street Journal ranked Stony Brook eighth among public universities with students going on to elite graduate programs. Our graduates are highly competitive in admission to the very best graduate and professional programs in the nation. They also are in high demand in the workplace. Nearly 350 corporate organizations recruit on campus each year. Stony Brook University's 1,100 acres are located on Long Island's North Shore, 60 miles east of New York City and close to beaches and woodlands. Our proximity to New York City and a railroad station right on campus makes it easy for students to take advantage of all that Manhattan has to offer. All of this, coupled with one of the lowest in-state and out-of-state tuitions, clearly marks us as a best value.
