| School mission | Binghamton University offers the attention of a small college with the choices and opportunities of a research university. Our students are among the most gifted in the nation and our faculty are devoted teachers and mentors who are committed to helping students obtain the skills they need to become worldly citizens. Together, Binghamton's faculty and students create a stimulating campus community that is supportive, rewarding, and fun. From designing sensors that detect toxins to writing and directing plays to contributing to the greater good through research studies for local municipalities, our students thrive in a diverse community promoting the vigorous exchange of innovative ideas. Binghamton has excellent facilities for learning and recreation - and students use them - attending concerts, participating in clubs and intramurals, hiking the nearly 200-acre nature preserve and cheering on Division I athletes. The local community offers professional baseball and hockey, opera, and dozens of parks and activities. Wired and wireless, the campus has state-of-the-art labs and libraries, yet our residential communities have a close-knit feel to nurture relationships and opportunities, with faculty masters leading programs that link living and learning. Our voluntary Discovery Program - a student-constructed sequence of courses, experiences and activities that promotes self-reflection and cultivates self-understanding - offers additional resources so students can link all aspects of their University life, enhancing Binghamton's living-learning environment. Additional educational opportunities are available through the Individualized Major Program in Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, which allows students to pursue studies in interdisciplinary majors for programs not listed in the University's Bulletin, such as social change, Russian studies, science communication, or religion and philosophy. The University also offers a growing number of 3/2 programs that allow focused students to complete their bachelor's and master's degrees in five rather than six years. Recognized nationally with seven major awards for its achievements in internationalization, Binghamton excels in providing a broad range of opportunities that provide students with the perspective to become global citizens. Our programs are multi-faceted, innovative and comprehensive. Our students take three semesters of foreign language, 20 percent of them study abroad, more than 1,600 students from over 100 nations are enrolled, and cultural and international festivals abound. We play a central role in the dual-diploma program with four Turkish universities and are establishing others, and our Languages Across the Curriculum program promotes use of languages other than English in non-language courses by employing international graduate students as Language Resource Specialists. |
