Mission
School mission Founded in 1924, Nazareth College is a coeducational college with undergraduate and graduate studies in the liberal arts and sciences and professional programs in health and human services, education, and management. In the past decade, Nazareth has produced 18 Fulbright recipients and two Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowships. Nazareth offers more than 40 degree programs, with new ones added regularly. Many of the College's majors lead to careers in fields experiencing job growth, including physical therapy, nursing, education, and marketing. Career preparation is an integral part of education at Nazareth and 93 percent of last year's graduates are either employed or enrolled in graduate school, while 81 percent are working in jobs related to their academic major. Faculty are dedicated to student-centered learning, and the College boasts a student/faculty ratio of 12:1 and an average class size of 19 students. The College also has a strong commitment to experience-based learning and civic engagement through its internship programs, student teaching opportunities, and curriculum-based field experience. In fact, 75 percent of Nazareth students have experiential learning within their academic field and 91 percent of Nazareth undergraduates participate in community service while they are students. Nazareth is one of few schools to have an on-campus Center for Service Learning, assisting faculty to incorporate service into the curriculum. Recently, The Corporation for National and Community Service named Nazareth College to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth. In addition, Nazareth has been recognized by The Princeton Review in its upcoming "Best 368 Colleges: 2009 Edition" as well as its "Best Northeastern Colleges" guide, highlighting the 97 percent student satisfactory rating. Student satisfaction contributes to the College's notable retention rates and graduation rates - both higher than the regional and national averages. In terms of tuition, however, Nazareth costs less than the average for national private colleges as well as for private colleges in New York state. Education coupled with professional preparation characterizes academic life at the College, but student life is also significant. Students may participate on 23 Division III varsity sports teams - from lacrosse to equestrian - and have a choice of living options that feature suites, cafes, and free laundry. They are encouraged to explore study abroad opportunities and Nazareth's Center for International Education has partnerships with institutions in many countries, including Australia, Italy, Japan, Peru, and South Korea. Undergraduate students are also offered free tickets to the Nazareth College Arts Center's world-class season series events. The College is located on 150 scenic acres near Rochester, N.Y., the third largest city in the state. Area attractions include the George Eastman House, Memorial Art Gallery, and the New York Wine and Culinary Center. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy jogging and cycling along the Erie Canal; skiing and snowboarding at nearby Bristol Mountain or Swain Resort; and canoeing and kayaking on Lake Ontario. The city also hosts a variety of annual festivals, including the Rochester International Jazz Festival, Lilac Festival, and Rochester High Falls International Film Festival. Day and weekend trips to the Finger Lakes and Canada are also options, and help round out the Nazareth College experience.
