| School mission | Hofstra University is a dynamic, private university where students succeed in 145 undergraduate and 155 graduate programs of study. The major divisions of the university provide students with a broad array of academic offerings: the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Communication, the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, the School of Education and Allied Human Services, the School of Law, Honors College, and New College for Interdisciplinary Studies. In the past year, Hofstra has made two momentous announcements. Hofstra University, in partnership with North Shore-LIJ Health System, is preparing to establish the nation's newest school of medicine. The new medical school plans to offer an MD degree program beginning in fall 2011, subject to receiving preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee for Medical Education and state approval. On October 15, 2008, Hofstra University will host the third and final presidential debate of the 2008 election season. Following the Commission on Presidential Debates' decision last fall to award the final 2008 presidential debate to Hofstra, President Stuart Rabinowitz announced plans for Educate '08, an unprecedented educational effort that engages not only students and faculty but also the public in a year-long series of conferences, exhibits, events and lectures. A student-faculty ratio of 14-to-1 and an average class size of 22 allow professors to teach small classes that emphasize interaction, critical thinking and analysis. Hofstra's students are motivated and success-oriented, and Hofstra provides the resources they need to reach their goals: an outstanding faculty, extensive academic resources and state-of-the-art facilities. Internships that take advantage of the proximity of New York City and special educational programs are designed to develop individual students' interests and abilities. Hofstra's campus life is vibrant and active as well, featuring more than 500 cultural and recreational events per year, with more than 150 clubs, all on a campus less than one hour from the center of New York City. Hofstra's faculty is one of its greatest resources. Ninety percent of full-time faculty members hold the highest degree in their fields. Faculty members are dedicated to excellence in teaching, scholarship and research, and many have been recognized with the nation's highest academic honors, including membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowships, and Emmy Awards. Hofstra distinctive, 240-acre campus, a recognized arboretum, is located 25 miles from New York City. The campus features state-of-the art teaching facilities, including a new converged newsroom, multimedia classrooms, one of the largest and most advanced academic trading rooms in the nation, six theaters and a rooftop observatory. The Hofstra libraries contain 1.2 million print volumes and provide 24/7 electronic access to more than 50,000 journals and electronic books. Additionally, there are 37 residence halls, 18 eateries, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and extensive athletic and recreational facilities. Hofstra is 100 percent program accessible to persons with disabilities. |
