| Mission | |
| School mission | Hobart and William Smith Colleges provide a student-centered learning environment that fosters a highly personalized education that is globally focused and grounded in the values of equity and service. We offer a broad array of majors and minors, a rich interdisciplinary program and limitless opportunities for self-discovery. As part of the dynamic interdisciplinary curriculum, academic disciplines overlap and grow, leading students in new directions. Because students are encouraged to achieve goals rather than take a prescribed set of classes, they move easily across programs and departments to create an individualized education, allowing them to approach their studies from many perspectives and through multiple experiences. Small classes allow professors and students to build rewarding intellectual, personal and creative partnerships. HWS views civic responsibility, community engagement and international education as integral components of a liberal arts education. The majority of students participate in at least one study-abroad experience at any of 33 sites in 28 countries during their four years, and every Hobart and William Smith student participates in service-orientated projects before graduating. This rigorous academic program challenges students??? minds while expanding their horizons to new worlds. Students from every discipline can engage in sustained, in-depth study for honors projects. Many students find opportunities to work closely with faculty in the field or laboratory, joining their faculty mentors as coauthors and presenters of papers at professional conferences. With faculty, students are involved in planning HWS Day, a yearly conference that brings prominent guests to campus to address topics such as Sports and Society, Earth Day and Einstein's Legacy. Thanks to the President's Forum, the President's Radio Show, a variety of symposia and major events like the Elizabeth Blackwell Award Ceremony, dozens of prominent speakers come to campus annually including Nobel Laureates, former US presidents, activists, politicians, poets, artists and thinkers. Hobart and William Smith students are supported in their professional aspirations through Pathways, a four-year career development program focused on exploring interests, developing career goals and obtaining work-related experience locally, nationally and internationally. With an elevated sense of purpose, students go on to become forces for change and progress across the globe no matter what their aspirations may be. A wide array of single-sex and co-ed housing options are available for students, including traditional residence halls as well as on- and off-campus apartments and small houses. Many of the campus facilities and residence halls are historic, while others have been recognized nationally for their impact on education. The HWS campus combines contemporary technology and facilities with nearly two centuries of architecture in a stunning, lakeside location. More than 80 percent of Hobart and William Smith students stay active through a variety of intercollegiate teams, intramurals, club sports or outdoor programs. Students who wish to compete at the top of their sport become members of one or more of the 22 varsity teams, many of which are regular contenders for conference and national titles. HWS is a charter signature of the American College and University President's Climate Commitment. Our faculty and students are devoted to our robust sustainability efforts that include working toward carbon neutrality and a community bicycle program. |
