Mission
School mission Founded in 1853 to pursue the liberal arts tradition, Monmouth College emerged during the 20th century as a well-known institution in the region, recognized for its friendly campus and strong academic programs which emphasize a high level of student-faculty interaction. Though shared by several small private liberal arts colleges, those traits of friendliness and interaction help Monmouth stand out and are frequently commented upon by campus visitors, current students and alumni. The college has also earned respect among its peers for the impressive percentage of Monmouth graduates who attend top graduate schools and form successful careers in business, education and science. In the early 1990s, the trustees, faculty and administration began a broad, long-term discussion to prepare the college for the educational requirements of the 21st century. One result was an extensive enhancement of the physical plant, with the construction of new buildings, including dormitories, a library and an athletic center, and substantial upgrades to many others. Today, the Monmouth campus is widely acclaimed for its beauty and for facilities that surpass those of most comparable colleges, even as additional improvements are on the near horizon. Besides its radiant personality and its glittering campus, Monmouth's Scottish heritage also gives it a unique feel. A first-class bagpipe band ushers in new students at their matriculation ceremony, marches them away from center stage at commencement and plays at traditional campus functions in between such as Homecoming and the honors convocation. But Monmouth's most important unique aspect is its new focus on "integrated learning." A forward-looking study was the impetus behind a realization that an integrated learning emphasis would become central to providing a liberal arts education of exceptional value. Focusing on connecting ideas from different disciplines that sometimes seem incongruous, Monmouth's integrated education prepares students to become the leaders of tomorrow. Education over the last century, at liberal arts colleges as well as universities, has moved toward emphasis on specialization in a major subject to prepare a student for a career. But today's world needs individuals who are adept at finding connections between disciplines and who can create and, indeed, lead effective teams of specialists. Concentration in a major discipline remains important, but the student destined for leadership in business, science or other endeavors must understand how the pieces from various specialties fit to make a whole. Based on this conclusion, the faculty undertook a multi-year effort to develop a new curriculum for the college, working with the administration and trustees. A major component of the new academic focus will be the construction of a new "integrated learning center," which will bring together science and business faculty and students for a unique undergraduate learning experience. In today's complex world, business and science have merged inextricably, but most college graduates lack the background needed to understand how the parts complement each other. Monmouth College graduates will possess the requisite critical thinking ability and analytical skills to meet this challenge. By the year 2020, Monmouth College intends to achieve national recognition for its leadership in teaching a unique and integrated learning program, which already distinguishes this liberal arts college from most others. Additional emphasis will be given to Monmouth's established traditions of personal attention and "engaged learning," not only through opportunities for special interactions among students and distinguished professors in the classroom and curriculum, but also in extracurricular activities. The college will continue to focus on admitting good students, who may not yet meet Ivy League admission standards but are willing to work hard to achieve their full potential.
