Mission
School mission Santa Clara University's educational mission to educate leaders of competence, conscience and compassion to help fashion a more just and humane world is informed by the 450 year old Jesuit tradition that emphasizes educating the whole person, critical thinking skills, a global perspective, and a values-based education. Student learning takes place at the undergraduate and graduate level in an educational environment that integrates rigorous inquiry and scholarship, creative imagination and reflective engagement with society. As an academic community, we expand the boundaries of knowledge and insight through teaching, research, artistic expression, and other forms of scholarship. It is primarily through discovering, communicating, and applying knowledge that we exercise our institutional responsibility as a voice of reason and conscience in society. SCU's ideal size and distinct educational approach presents an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to participate as a dynamic community of scholars. Students receive the benefits of a large, rigorous, multi-faceted academic environment, balanced with personal attention and care in a beautiful 106 acre campus setting. Small classes and courses taught exclusively by faculty assure students the best opportunity to develop their skills and potentials while seeking expression for their unique passions. This commitment to academic excellence is reflected in the facilities developed for students, including the new Harrington Learning Commons, Sobrato Technology Center, and Orradre Library. Opened in spring 2008, the new 194,000 square foot building merges the classic components of liberal arts education with modern information technologies and Mission-inspired architecture that has become the intellectual heart of the SCU campus. To reflect the way students are encouraged to learn, both individually and collaboratively, the new learning commons and library has several dedicated spaces that serve multiple needs. There are 25 workrooms, several laboratories for faculty development and multimedia presentations, three video viewing and taping rooms, wireless networking, and more than 1,000 reader seats, each with a wired network connection and electric power. A focus on both in and out of class learning provides additional opportunities for students to learn with and through others. SCU's campus is enhanced by its state-of-the-art facilities and exceptional Residential Learning Communities. This dynamic and engaged community is central to the unique educational experience that characterizes an SCU education and allows the university to focus on educating talented students from diverse backgrounds who seek a comprehensive educational experience. Santa Clara's location 40 miles south of San Francisco in the heart of the Silicon Valley provides an unparalleled range of educational, cultural, social, vocational and recreational opportunities that allow students to develop a focused understanding of their academic disciplines, an appreciation of diverse cultures, and development of their whole selves, providing the basis for productive, healthy and fulfilling lives.
