Big Picture
The best thing about WMU is that there are things to do that are relatively close to the campus. No one feels that they are in the boonies, and just have dirt to play with. I would change WMU's parking stickers. I think that anyone that has a sticker can park anywhere on campus. It sometimes is difficult to find a parking spot. The school's size is just right. Most of my town goes to WMU, so they really don't 'raise an eyebrow' when I tell them where I go. Kalamazoo is defintely a college town. I really don't have an opinion about the administration. Controversy? @ WMU? Where? I think there is a lot of school pride at times. I think Lawson Lunatics show a lot of love for the hockey team. The Lunatics stick by the team through thick and thin. There is nothing about WMU that is unusual. The one experience I will remember is picking up my books for the first time. What a hectic experience. The most frequent student complaint is about the parking, or lack there of on campus.
Academic Life
The smaller classes know my name. My favorite class was water aerobics. My least favorite is Principles of Biology. Students don't study as much as they should. Class participation is getting more common than what I heard it was in the past. Yes, WMU students have intellectual conversations outside of class. Students are competitive. Whether its mexican train, ping-pong--we are competitive. WMU's academic requirements = waste of time=Gen. Ed's. When you get to college, I think one should be able to just jump into the field they are going into. If there are pre-reqs for those classes, then they should be taken. Otherwise, these proficiencies are a waste.
Student Body
I try to keep to my own kind. I don't have much experiences with people out of my racial circle. Most students where hoodies and jeans to class. Different types of students interact through force. They are forced to work together even though they don't want to but their professors think it will be beneficial because in the workplace they will at some point work with people they don't like. Most WMU students are from MI. Upper-middle class is most prevalent. Yes, we are politically aware, those who choose to be that is. No, students don't talk about how much they'll earn one day, unless they are engineers.
