With a student-faculty ratio of 12:1, engaged learning is a hallmark of the VI experience. Learning and leadership opportunities extend beyond the classroom with an honors program, internships, travel/study programs and undergraduate research, all of which provide a comprehensive educational experience. VI is known for innovative curricular programs that offer exciting options for students. Programs of study include art, biology, business administration, education, English, equine studies, history, legal studies, photography and digital imaging, physical education, political science, psychology, religious studies, social work, sport management and theatre arts; and students may choose to specialize within a major or pre-professional program such as pre-medicine, pre-veterinary or pre-law. Minors are available in many of the concentrations listed above, as well as in chemistry, the classics, cultural heritage and public arts, Equine-Assisted Growth and Learning (EAGALA), mathematics and sports medicine. VI has the distinction of being one of only two colleges in the nation to earn the EAGALA-endorsed equine therapy program. The cultural heritage program hones in on the culturally rich Southwest Virginia region with new courses that offer hands-on experience in cultural studies and public arts through coordinated training at area arts venues. Intercollegiate sports are a big part of campus life for active participants and those cheering on the Intermont Cobras. A powerhouse in equestrian competition, VI riding teams have won 15 national championships in intercollegiate riding since 2001. In addition to equestrian sports, the College fields athletic teams which compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC): golf, basketball, baseball and soccer for men; softball, basketball, soccer and volleyball for women; and co-ed cycling. Students are also involved in a variety of student organizations and intramural sports including flag football, bowling and paintball. VI offers academic, athletic, and performance-based scholarships as well as need-based grants, awarding approximately $4 million annually to students. VI is accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and a member of the Common Application. With close to 600 students from more than 35 states and six foreign countries, VI welcomes applications from all students regardless of gender, faith, race, age or national origin. Virginia Intermont's historic campus sits atop the highest hill in Bristol with views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, an inspiring setting where students pursue their passion and find their voice.
