For 100 years, VanderCook College of Music has been dedicated to preparing musicians to become music educators. Through a rigorous course of study in band, orchestra, jazz, choir, general music, and music technology, VanderCook graduates receive comprehensive, practical training designed to prepare them for the challenges in today's K-12 classrooms. All VanderCook students are instructed in the methodology and techniques of far more instruments - 18 in all - and for longer duration than at any other institution. With its academic and outreach programming, VanderCook promotes the passionate life-long teaching, learning, playing, enjoyment, and appreciation of music to its students and the surrounding community. Uniquely qualified to teach all areas of music specialization for any grade level, every VanderCook graduate is able to offer unique guidance and experience to each of their students. On average, 95% of students secure teaching jobs within their first year after graduation. As the first institution in the state where professional musicians could learn to become public school band directors, VanderCook had a pioneering role in Illinois' music education history. Currently it is the only independent college in the nation dedicated exclusively to music teacher preparation. In addition, VanderCook hosts one of nation's largest continuing education programs for music teachers, and provides outreach programs and public performances in Chicago's south side neighborhoods. Operating as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit institution since 1954, VanderCook has been located on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus since 1996. VanderCook is fully accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities, and the National Association of Schools of Music. |
