The best thing about UVM is community: everyone is friendly and willing to meet new people. There are so many opportunities to meet your neighbor on campus and interact with all different sorts by becoming actively involved on campus! One thing I'd change is our schools president FOGEL! His "vision" is to be the university with the most construction occuring, which it is, although the typical students from out-of-state is paying 32,000 a year to go to this school and would rather know their tuition is being spent on better ideas. We don't need more buildings! We just spent over 30 millions dollars on the DAVIS CENTER which is the new student center and is ridiculous! We had a perfectly capable student center that can handle the student capacity of UVM, but Fogel had to go waste peoples tax $ and student tuition on that, it's LEED certified with a silver standing. Most of my time on campus is in the library or on the green if its a nice day! The biggest recent controversy on campus was SLAP's (student labor action project) tent city on the green, they refused to leave and so got booted by the police! Before that it was the death of Michelle Gardner Quinn.
If you make the attempt to know your professors they will know you by name and always have office hours at which you can attend them and show you care. Favorite class was listed by the diversity requirement SOC (sociology) 19 with Thomas Macias (a mexican american) the class covered race relations in the United States. Students study constantly, you can have saturday off no doubt, but the library is pretty full on SUNDAY! Yes there are intellectual conversations. Students are competitive in the science majors specifically biology!
I am currently an orientation leader for UVM and we have 40 students participating. 50% are identified as LGBT, 6 students are from Bronx, NY and fall into the category of ALANA (asian, latino, african, native american), Burlington has a great refugee program for students from Sudan and Tibet whom also make it into UVM. Most UVM students are middle class white M***s that have moderate political views that turn over to liberal at UVM. Making money for these students is big thats why many go into the pre-vet, pre-health, or pre-law tracks at UVM. Birkenstocks are BIG here! During the winter UGGS are too.
The Best Things
may activities, clubs to get involved with, alot of students!, great top notch professors, we're a public ivy league!
The Worst Things
President Fogel, big party scene, everything downtown closes before 9:30, but, really college is what you make of it!
