Big Picture
UNCG isnt the best (as opposed to UNC Chapel Hill) so nobody gets excited when you say where you go. It is a great deal for the money, the education is actually really good...the teachers are also really caring/helpful. It is a large college town, bc there are like 4 colleges nearby...Bennett, Greensboro College, NC A&T and UNCG. There's not a football team, but our baseball and soccer teams are pretty good. UNCG's nickname is UNCGay...but I think most colleges have lots of wierd ppl and also gay ppl. There are a lot of black people, and the town/college are suprisingly racial (for 2008). There are "black" parties and "white" parties and clubs. Don't get them confused! LOL. The housing situation is improving rapidly, its getting a lot more off-campus options, which is great! UNCG is also known as a "suitcase school"...as in many ppl. leave every single weekend and live in a dorm "out of their suitcase"...many people live in the small towns about 30 mins. from Gboro and go home to work every weekend. If you get to know ppl who stay, its not so bad.
Academic Life
The professors at UNCG are great! I havent had any "bad" teachers yet, and I have been here 3 years already... I took Accounting last semester with low expectations, but the teacher was so enthusiastic, that I actually enjoyed the class a lot. Smaller classes have a lot of participation opportunities, but bigger ones have some as well. A lot of freshmen transfer/go on academic probation but its bc they are too excited for college! You do have to study, but you are going to get an education, so that makes sense. I dont study very often, I do spend time on papers or projects that are due soon. My major is called Consumer, Retail, and Apparel studies. (the CARS dept.) They recently updated the study to include concentrations in retailing and consumer studies, apparel product design, and for the coming years outsourcing (as a major!). The programs in this department are really good...the education includes a required summer internship class, and that really helps you get real life experience...Plus it will help you get a job when you graduate as well.
Student Body
As previously stated, there is racial tension in Greensboro, and at UNCG...plus there are a lot of "weird people" who congregate together. The frat/sorority people hang together, the black people hang together, the music ppl hang together, the theather ppl, the dance ppl, and the sports players hang together. There is some mixing, but on the whole not much. Most of uncg students are from NC, fewer are out-of-state. A lot of ppl are democrat. They have been trying to get everyone registered to vote on campus lately...and then to get you to vote for Obama. Its kinda annoying. I think though, most students aren't very politically aware, or at least the ones I know LOL.
