Big Picture
It can be hard to find someone who says UMBC was my fist choice school. I admit it wasnÕt mine. Having been rejected by other schools, it was the next best thing. In reality I guess it was THE best thing. I have had opportunities to do research along side some of the top professors in my field and IÕve been able to have an on campus job and play rugby, things that I may have never been able to do at a bigger school. UMBC is growing, and I hope that more people will see its changing reputation and respect it as a honors research university. I want to hear that UMBC is someoneÕs first choice, not an alternative.
Academic Life
Professors at UMBC are required to do research, this means that there are a ton of opportunities to get to know more about what your teachers are interested in. IÕve really had great professors at this school (although IÕve never had the computer science professors; IÕve heard bad things) For the most part, all my classes were great, with interesting material and enthusiastic professors.
Student Body
The down side of UMBC: There are a TON of commuters. I think particularly for freshman its detrimental. The commuters donÕt really interact with the on campus people so there is kind of a divide there. Other than that, just the athletes think there all that ( which I guess happens at every school).
The Best Things
the amazing opportunities for research
The Worst Things
that there's very little school spirit
