Big Picture
The best thing about UF is our spirit and Gainesville gives you the true college experience. It is a small town but big enough to have a good time. However, coming from Miami, Gainesville gets a really boring after not being home for a while. I've had many memorable times at UF but the one that sticks out is Halloween of freshman year. I got really wasted and I wondered around town aimlessly. They later told me I was surrounded by 3 cop cars and I was calling people telling them to pick me up in places that don't exist. What's amazing about that night is that I did not get ran over by a car or arrested.
Academic Life
UF has a lot of smart kids but we are a large university so you'll occasionally meet someone missing a couple of neurons. I'm glad I chose to be in the college of journalism and communications. It's a great program that gears you toward gaining real life experience and do actual work. They teach you the theory and concepts but make you apply it, which is essential for any communications major.
Student Body
We have a diverse campus. There is a fairly large minority population at UF but the university is still predominantly white. And the kids that come from small towns around central and north Florida tend to be republicans, who like to go hunting and have big trucks. That's all cool but it's not my crowd. Most of my friends and I share similar backgrounds. However, that is not to say people are racist or discriminatory, most people are friendly no matter your race or religion. As far as political activism, its no Berkley but a lot of students are politically involved and you see a lot of interesting groups like Hare Krishna.
The Best Things
It is a university that you can be proud of the atheletic program and the academic program.
The Worst Things
That your stuck in Gainesville.
