Big Picture
I think the best thing about UCI is that the campus small, yet beautiful. It is easy to walk from one class to another since nothing is too far compared to UCLA or UCSD, and a huuuge park in the middle of campus is very relaxing and beautiful on sunny days. Also, UCI has a lot of resources to help students make the most of their college experience. One thing I would change is the location. Irvine is a pretty boring and quiet city. There isn't much to do if you don't have a car, and LA is about 45-1 hour away. A lot of the partying is done through sorority and frat events, unless you know people already. Not really a college town. Also, the cops suck here! I think the campus is just right to get to classes and you can take classes from other schools because they're all not too far from each other I spend most of my time around the art area or the student center because there are places to eat and hang out during breaks. The biggest controversy most recently is that robberies have happened twice in Mesa Court, which is one of the freshman dorms.
Academic Life
In my studio art classes, the professors eventually get to know my name because the classes are luckily a lot smaller than normal lectures, which can be as big as 400 students. My favorite class right now is my digital imaging class, which is learning photoshop and how to apply skills we learn to create our own designs and images. My least favorite class is a visiting artists lecture because the professor sucks and takes teh class way too seriously. Class participation is very important in my art classes, but in normal lectures, class participation is not always required. The education at UCI is geared more towards learning for yourself. All the resources are there to help you succeed, but it depends what you do with them.
Student Body
Most students will wear casual clothes, such as jeans, t shirts and flip flops. Different types of students do interact, but I still see segregation between most religions. For example, mostly asians will hang out other asians, caucasions with other caucasians, and blacks with blacks. Most of UCI students are from southern california, but I've met a lot of people from northern california as well. I would say UCI has a lot of wealthy students that come from successful backgrounds
