Big Picture
Albany seems huge at first and is mildly complicated, only because every single building looks like every other building surrounding it. I love that there's other colleges nearby and it's easy to get downtown on the bus system. There's plenty of Great Dane pride, check out a basketball game to see for yourself! There's recently been more awareness about crime on campus and in the downtown area due to a highly-publicised shooting and a rash of stabbings.
Academic Life
The English department at UA is terrific - it's tight-knit and professors talk to one another and all know each other and are quick to share their opinions on their co-workers. There are some amazing English professors that I feel lucky to have had teach me. The GenEds are terrible and excessive and a waste of time - most students skip them as they're in 150+ lecture halls so attendance isn't mandatory. They tend to bring down your GPA because they're boring and useless. Professors that you get to know are great though and most that I've met outside of class are friendly and helpful. With the new nano-technology building, apparently graduating from UA looks great now. Hurrah for a waste of students tuition money, couldn't they have bought something useful to the students? Like ANOTHER fountain, perhaps?
Student Body
Albany is extremely diverse and tolerant. You will meet anyone and everyone you've ever imagined, and a few characters you never could have dreamed up. But for the most part the student body is a bunch of rich kids from Long Island or the surrounding area, who will spend the rest of their lives living off of mommy and daddy's successes. Honestly, when I'm talking to a guy at the bar and he says he's from Long Island, I walk away. They're just too much trouble and too high-maintenance for someone who didn't grow up in the same environment.
The Best Things
Everything! There's always something to do - if you say you're bored then you're obviously an unmotivated idiot not making an effort to find something. Hooray for underage bars and Chubby's Tuesdays and D'Carlito's pizza on your way home!
The Worst Things
... well brunch ends at 2am on the weekends, it should definitely go until at least 4. Normal dining hall food leaves something to be desired but there's meal swipes in the campus center and the special dinners in the dining halls are fantastic! I wouldn't mind if the rooms were a bit bigger either, but hey, you can't have it all.
