Despite its setting in Southern California, UCR has a distinctly Scottish feel. All residence halls at the University of California—Riverside are named for landmarks in Scotland, including Aberdeen-Inverness and Pentland Hills. Student athletes compete as UCR Highlanders in the NCAA Division I Big West Conference.  The school’s original mascot was a live Scottish terrier; today, sports teams are supported by a kilt-clad bear named Scotty. Members of the student Pep Band don plaid berets and sashes as they play the “Brave Scots” fight song at sports matches, and students who play the bagpipes or drums can join the school’s Pipe Band as well. More than 70 percent of UCR students are commuters, and freshmen do not have to live on campus. Students may want to hang around after class, however, for notable annual events like the fall Block Party and Spring Splash. There are more than 300 student organizations to check out, too, including about 40 fraternities and sororities. Freshmen can ease into college with the help of the First Year Success Series, a combination of seminars and workshops that teach students study and time management skills. Riverside is in an ideal location for roadtrips, with Disneyland and Orange County within a 40 mile drive and Los Angeles about 60 miles away.

UCR is one of 10 schools in the public state system, and was the official UC Citrus Experiment Station before becoming a university. In the years since, faculty researchers have bred several new types of fruit, including the Melogold grapefruit and the Golden Nugget orange. Today, the university offers well-regarded graduate programs through the Bourns College of Engineering and Graduate School of Education. Notable alumni include Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Steve Breen, best-selling mystery novel author Elizabeth George, and Nobel Prize-winning chemist Richard Schrock.

School mission (as provided by the school):

UC Riverside is a living laboratory for groundbreaking exploration of issues critical to Inland Southern California, the state and communities around the world. We are located in one of the fastest growing regions in a state whose economy ranks among nations. With a population of more than 19,000 students, UCR is the most diverse campus in the prestigious 10 campus UC system, and is the fifth most diverse university in the nation. UCR has a history of giving first-generation college-goers a jump-start toward achieving their dreams, enabling social and economic mobility. We inspire our students to expand their horizons, and we equip them to succeed. Whether they're aiming for graduate or professional school or they plan a career after college, UCR is the right place to help students achieve their goals. With an annual statewide economic impact of nearly $1 billion, UCR is actively shaping the region's future. Our recently opened satellite in Palm Desert includes an innovative entrepreneurial MBA, and graduate programs in the arts. Plans include opening a medical school that will bring a higher level of care to our community and carry UCR's tradition of applicable innovation into the realm of health care. More than just a place of discovery, we've earned a reputation for translating fundamental knowledge into actionable solutions. By applying our distinct strengths and advantages strategically, we carry forward the UC system's tradition of public service. Whether in entomology, engineering, or new voices in literature, UCR is contributing to the wider world.

Student Reviews

UCR is a school where you can experience a lot of opportunities as well as learn in the classroom in that UCR in comparison to UCLA or UCB has Latinos and African Americans beyond just lip service and because of the multi-culturalism there is a great feeling of community and unity in my opinion. The school is nice and Riverside a good place, but it is not a huge city like LA but it is very close to Irvine and LA if you want to do other things on the weekends. School Pride is very low-Number 1 reason is no football team, and the feeling that this is an ok school by many especially the upper tier students as many have scholarships-this leads many to seek transfers. Also our mascot the Highlander-is really a bear so ....not exactly a clear idea for everyone to take pride in, there are many buildings with Scottish names. I would say the worst thing about Riverside is the lack of social community in that many go home for the weekend and don't stay and have fun like during the week; they could really make a cool place I believe. Controversy came lately with the Chancellor leaving for another school, but she got the UCR medical school on track and that will raise or visibility quite a bit especially in the region. We have as of yet had not replacement. There are many groups on campus that you can get involved with Mecha, Student Govt(ASUCR), frats, sororities, professional societies, Honors(one of the best funded in the country), all kinds of groups even jugglers, Dems, Republicans, ASPB-they have 10 million budget and put concerts and other event on campus. We have a Wednesday concert every week called a nooner and this is the best day of the week for culture and students as there are many vendors that come on campus and it is a cool vibe.

The City of Riverside will try to tell you that it's a college town...don't be fooled, it's not! In reality, Riverside has four colleges in the city: Cal Baptist U., La Sierra U., Riverside Community College (a respectable JC), and UCR. In actuality, the only college in this town is UCR. The campus and student body are huge; compared to the others, UCR is closest to what most think of when they think "college." Academics at UCR is legit and respectable, whereas at LSU and Cal Bap. it's a joke...I'm being dead serious when I tell you that those who spend the outrageous $$ to attend these two private universities WASTED their time and money. As for the City of Riverside, if you're from SoCal, you may already know this, but Riverside is not for the majority of college kids. The town is run by old-timers whose favorite dream is to turn Riverside into little "OC" (that's Orange County for those of you in the Mid-West living under rocks). There are only five bars, three of which can, on occasion, be fairly dangerous; there is only one (yeah 1!) club that shamefully charges a 20$ entry fee; as for letting lose after exams at a college party, forget it! The cops here are run by those same old-timers, your party will be shut down before 10pm...I'm not kidding. BIG PICTURE: UCR good school for academics, although you will hear different from other students. The City, quite frankly, sucks...my best advice is to work or smooch from mom&dad so you can afford to escape to Palm Springs, the LA area, or San Diego.

I have loved my experience at UCR because there are so many ways to get involved on campus, and there are so many genuine people here. The only reason people try to put Riverside down is just because it is not a college town, but other then that most people can't complain. Our campus is constantly growing with new buildings like our new commons and Interdisciplinary building. Also our ASPBoard continues to provide us with either free or low costing concerts like Chris Brown, Ludacris, E-40 and others. They also give oppurtunities to upcoming bands to show their stuff on Wednesdays, which is called Wednesday Nooners. Student life also funds programs on Thursday Night for Organizations on Campus who want to have events, but who don't have all the funds needed. There is usually so many events happening that it is hard to keep up, and I would say that that is one of the best things about my campus, There is always something to do.
