Located at the southern edge of the Appalachian Mountains, the University of Alabama—Huntsville campus is in the northern part of the state, about 100 miles from Nashville. The university, sometimes shortened to UAHuntstville or UAH, offers master’s degree programs in business, engineering, and nursing, among other fields.
Outside the classroom, UAH students can get involved with more than 50 campus clubs, about a dozen fraternities and sororities, The Exponent newspaper, and student government. UAHuntstville also offers sports at the intramural, club, and varsity levels. The UAH Chargers intercollegiate teams are members of the NCAA Division II Gulf Conference and compete in about 14 sports. Notable University of Alabama—Huntsville alumni include science fiction author Travis Taylor, and founder and chairman of Discovery Communications John Hendricks, who established a scholarship for UAHuntsville history majors.

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAHuntsville) is an autonomous campus of The University of Alabama System dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and service. UAHuntsville is a key participant in one of the nation's major international centers for advanced technological research and utilizes its position in this environment to provide unique opportunities and creative programs for students, faculty, and the community. UAHuntsville is adjacent to a high technology community consisting of Fortune 500 corporations in support of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, the DIA Missile and Space Intelligence Center, the Army Materiel Command, and Logistics Support Activity. The university's research division operates several research centers that provide faculty and students outstanding research opportunities in major university thrust areas. These centers include the Aerophysics Research Center, the Center for Applied Optics, the Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research, the Center for the Management of Science and Technology, the Center for Modeling, Simulation and Analysis, the Earth System Science Center, the Information Technology Center, the Office of Technology and Commercialization, the Propulsion Research Center, the Research Institute, the Rotocraft Systems Engineering and Simulation Center, the Systems Management and Production Center, and the Humanities Center. UAHuntsville is a Carnegie High Research Activity university offering programs in the liberal arts and sciences, nursing, business and engineering. Total enrollment is approximately 7600 with about 20% in graduate programs concentrated mostly in engineering and the physical sciences. Research contract awards totaled $81 million in FY 2008-2009.
