Those that have visited the Massachusetts State House in the heart of downtown Boston have surely come across the campus of Suffolk University, situated in the historic neighborhood of Beacon Hill. Originally founded as a law school in 1906, Suffolk University is now the third-largest university in Boston. Students are not required to live on campus during their career at the university, and housing is determined on a first-come-first-served basis. The majority of undergraduate students live off campus in an apartment or commute from home from the surrounding neighborhoods. The Suffolk Rams are members of the NCAA Division III Great Northeast Athletic Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC.) The school currently hosts 13 varsity sports and provides seasonal intramural sports for its student body.
The university is comprised of the Suffolk University Law School, Suffolk College of Arts and Sciences, the Sawyer Business School, and the New England School of Art and Design. It also has international campuses in Madrid and Dakar, Senegal, as well as two other regional campuses in Massachusetts. For students who find final exams to be stressful, the university offers an annual celebration of semester’s end with “Relaxation Day.” This day, provided by the student program council, offers students massages, sleep masks, and smoothies while featuring ways to stay focused on studying. Notable Suffolk alumni include former World Series of Poker champion Dan Harrington and author and journalist James Bamford, who writes about U.S. government intelligence agencies.
