Mission
School mission: The Jewish Hospital School of Nursing was founded as a hospital-based diploma program in 1902. The Barnes Hospital School of Nursing was founded as a hospital-based diploma program in 1955. The two programs came together in 2005 as a baccalaureate and higher degree academic institution. The legacy schools have created thousands of nurses who have touched the lives of countless people in St. Louis and beyond for over a century. The mission of Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College is to develop nursing professionals committed to compassionate, evidence-based practice, relevant discovery, and continuous learning. Situated on the campus of a truly world-class academic health center, The Washington University Medical Center, our students have the unique opportunity to learn at two of the top hospitals in the country, both magnet designated, Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children's Hospital. Our students learn in collaboration with the Washington University School of Medicine and the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, two of the top programs in the country. Goldfarb School of Nursing educates future nurses in three different Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs: the 12 month accelerated program for those who already have a bachelors degree in another field plus nursing prerequisite courses, the upper division program for students who have completed their first two years of general studies elsewhere, and the BSN completion program for RNs who do not have the degree yet. There are also a variety of graduate, Master of Science in Nursing tracks: nurse administrator, nurse educator, adult health nurse practitioner, acute care nurse practitioner and nurse anesthetist. A dual Doctor of Philosophy - Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program is being planned to create practice scientists, PhD nurse researchers whose research informs practice, and DNP practicing nurses whose practice informs research. The College seeks to create leaders in the practice and academic spheres. In the programs of discovery research, Goldfarb School of Nursing seeks to attain prominence in select high need, high impact areas of research. All programs within the College have the vision of contributing to the health of the community, particularly the underserved. Vital to accomplishing the mission and purposes of the school is diversity of students, faculty and staff. Also a key to success for the school is the ability to attract and retain the best students, faculty and staff.
