St. John’s University is a Roman Catholic institution open to students of all faiths. The school is located in New York City, in the borough of Queens, but also has New York campuses in Staten Island and Manhattan. On campus, there are more than 150 academic, professional, and recreational student organizations, including the St. John’s Bread and Life program that provides support and services for the poor. Greek life is and has been a part of campus life since 1956. Because of its location in New York City, all St. John’s freshmen are required to complete a course called Discover New York. This introduction to the city allows students to examine New York through a variety of academic disciplines. The Red Storm of St. John’s University is a member of the Big East Conference in the NCAA Division I. The university’s athletic program fields 16 intercollegiate teams but is most well known for its men’s basketball team, which is among the top 10 programs nationally with the most NCAA tournament appearances.
St. John’s University has a variety of graduate programs, including a Tier 1 School of Law and School of Education. Along with campuses in the New York metro area, the school also has a campus in Rome and a graduate center in Oakdale, N.Y. St. John’s also offers three distinct semester-long study abroad programs that take place in Europe, which include stints in Rome, Paris, and Salamanca, Spain. Notable alumni of the university include Bob Sheppard, former sports announcer for the New York Yankees; Gary Muto, president of women’s clothing retailer Ann Taylor LOFT; and Hugh L. Carey, former governor of New York.

Students come from 46 states and 110 countries to pursue more than 100 programs in the arts, the sciences, business, education, pharmacy and the health sciences. Along with our three residential New York City campuses - in Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan - and a location in Oakdale, NY, St. John's has a campus in Rome, Italy, and a study abroad site in Paris, France. St. John's Staten Island campus offers the only accelerated, three-year bachelor's degree programs in New York City. All St. John's students are able to meet for class in historic locations such as Central Park, Ellis Island and Wall Street through Discover New York, a freshman course. The distinctive Freshman Passport Program allows students to spend two weeks of their first semester at the University's Rome, Italy, campus. Study abroad opportunities continue throughout students' four years. For example, students can spend a semester, winter or summer break at the Rome campus or St. John's Paris location. Through Discover the World, students can earn 15 credits living and learning in three great cities in a single semester. Following the example of St. Vincent de Paul, the 17th-century priest dedicated to serving those in need, the University encourages students to have a positive impact on the world. Through academic service-learning, every student has the opportunity to engage in course-related volunteer activities throughout the New York metropolitan area. The University's active Campus Ministry also offers students many opportunities to distribute food to the homeless; volunteer at soup kitchens and other agencies; and participate in service "plunges" in locations including New Orleans, Europe and Central America. The University's Vincentian mission is notable in the unique Ozanam Scholars Program - a competitive, four-year scholarship program that prepares students to address global poverty and injustice through teaching, service and research. St. John's mission also is evident in the University's focus on preserving the environment. Students serve as "sustainability coordinators," working with administrators and faculty to promote recycling and other "green" habits on campus. In November, St. John's placed fourth in a field of 40 colleges and universities participating in the Campus Conservation Nationals 2010, the first real-time, nationwide electricity and water-use reduction competition. In addition, St. John's support for New York City's environmental efforts has won plaudits from Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who awarded the University a "Gold Star" for its efforts as a partner in the "PLANYC 2030 Challenge," an effort to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent throughout the city. Along with quality academics, pre-professional and leadership preparation, students at St. John's benefit from vibrant campus life activities, including 180 student clubs and organizations. Of course, students also enjoy cheering for St. John's 17 Division I, BIG EAST men's and women's athletics teams. |
