San Francisco State University, known as SFSU or SF State for short, is an urban campus and part of the larger California State University system. At SFSU, it’s important to apply for university housing early, as there aren’t enough spaces for every student. Freshmen can apply to live in school residence halls—including a science and technology themed building, and university apartment complexes group students by age, not year in school. SFSU is commuter-friendly, with public transportation stops near campus. There are about 300 student organizations to consider, including fraternities and sororities. Most of the SF State sports teams compete in the NCAA Division II California Collegiate Athletic Association; the school’s wrestling team is a member of the NCAA Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Among San Francisco State’s diverse undergraduate academic offerings is the College of Ethnic studies, a unique division with majors including Africana studies, Asian American studies, and La Raza studies. For graduate students, SFSU has schools of business, education, health, and more. Notable alumni of SFSU include Jeffrey Tambor, a veteran of TV sitcoms including Arrested Development; Danny Glover, star of the Lethal Weapon movies; and Charles Hall, inventor of the waterbed.

School mission and unique qualities (as provided by the school):

San Francisco State University, located in one of the world's most vibrant and beautiful cities, is a recognized leader in addressing issues both global and close to home. In the global arena, SF State typically enrolls the largest number of international students at any comprehensive university in the U.S., and ranks second among U.S. universities for the number of students who study abroad for an academic year. With a diverse range of students from almost every state and nearly 100 countries, the University community is a perfect setting for learning to succeed in a pluralistic society and global economy. Our highly diverse campus consistently ranks in the top 20 nationwide in awarding undergraduate degrees to minorities.
SF State's pioneering commitment to community and civic engagement is prevalent throughout the curriculum. Nearly 300 courses combine academic study with community involvement, and our location in a center of business, technology and culture provides a laboratory for community-service projects, work-study opportunities and internships. The University has been named by Princeton Review one of 81 "Colleges with a Conscience," and is classified as one of the Carnegie Foundation's "Community Engagement" institutions.
Ever since it was established in 1899 as a teacher-training school, SF State has been known for its commitment to excellent teaching. Students work closely with senior professors and other instructors from freshman year through graduation. Trained in some of the finest institutions in the world, faculty members include winners of prestigious teaching awards, cutting-edge researchers, and professionals devoted to solving community problems.
SF State awards bachelor's degrees in 115 areas, master's in 95, and a doctorate in educational leadership. Programs offered jointly with University of California campuses include a Ph.D. and Ed.D. in education with a concentration in special education with UC Berkeley, and physical therapy master's and doctorate degrees with UC San Francisco. In addition, SF State offers 27 credential programs and three certificate programs.
SF State's motto is Experientia Docet--Experience Teaches. Graduates consistently say that hands-on learning was what helped them most when beginning their careers. Students apply their talents and classroom learning to real-world challenges through community-service learning, credit-earning internships, and participation with community-focused centers and institutes that address issues relating to health, education, the environment, business, child care and undeserved communities.
More than 200 clubs and organizations help students explore their interests and connect with others. The Associated Students, SF State's student government, supports a first-class child care program, low-cost health insurance and a legal resource center. In addition, many fraternities and sororities are active on campus.
Intercollegiate sports for women are basketball, cross-country, indoor and outdoor track and field, soccer, softball and volleyball. For men, SF State offers baseball, basketball, cross-country, soccer and wrestling. The University is a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, an NCAA Division II conference, for all sports except wrestling which is in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Intramural leagues, tournaments and recreational activities--men's, women's and coed--are offered in the fall and spring semesters. Sports include basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, swimming, bowling, ultimate frisbee, water polo, softball, badminton, tennis and flag football.
SF State is an arts and culture center, with hundreds of workshops, guest lectures and exhibits held throughout the year. Events and exhibits feature the work of students and faculty members as well as professionals from outside the University community.

Student Reviews

The best thing about SFSU are the random sleeping/resting spots, the greenery, the public piano rooms, the lounges and computer labs. I spend time randomly when on campus, apart from being in class. The biggest recent controversy are the budget cuts. That's all I've been hearing about this semester. The most frequent complaints I hear are either about certain professors who irk the students, or that everything is expensive and becoming more expensive.

Like any college, SFSU has its good and bad points. Good points: 1. Student population is friendly 2. Easily accessible by public transportation 3. Affordable (compared to UCs and private schools) 4. Helpful student organizations 5. On-campus recruiting for jobs 6. Student center that offers a lot of conveniences, such as ATMs from a variety of banks and several cafeteria options 7. San Francisco is a recognizable/respectable name to put on your resume Bad points: 1. Classes are hard to get/fill up quickly 2. Students can only sign up for 8 units (2 core classes) during priority registration 3. Registration order is unfair (Seniors, Freshmen, Juniors, Sophomores; it should be Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, Freshmen) 4. Teacher aides may grade inconsistently 5. Library facilities could be updated 6. Teachers are knowledgable but often do not seem to care about their students doing well

Justine Senior

unfortunately we are a commuter school. Students are generally juggling school, work and families, so the typical college town feel is not there. Once I tell people I go to SFSU, its usually accompanied by ohh so and so goes there. Everyone knows someone or other which attends our school. The hard part is catching them while they are on campus. I am usually on campus just for the duration of classes, marketing meetings and any group meetings. Otherwise I choose to do all my studying off campus.
