Mission
School mission: At Sacramento State, "Leadership begins here" is more than a slogan. We offer students life-changing opportunities to become leaders in their communities. Opportunities to learn from great teachers. Opportunities for one-of-a-kind internships and research experiences. And, through our location in the heart of California's Capital City, opportunities to make a difference through public service. Sacramento State is a vibrant metropolitan university that is among the largest campuses in the California State University system. We enroll a multicultural student body of 28,000, and graduate about 6,000 students each year. Despite our size, quality teaching in small classes remains a top priority. Students enjoy personalized attention from their professors, as well as extensive research and internship opportunities in Sacramento, the heart of California government. We're particularly proud of our beautiful 300-acre campus, with its lush landscaping and 3,000 trees. Miles of trails stretch along the nearby American River Parkway, linking our campus and student housing with recreational areas such as Folsom Lake and Old Sacramento. Sacramento State remains one of the nation's best higher education values, with student fees among the lowest in the nation. About half of our students receive some form of financial assistance. Sacramento State is looking to the future with a major campus initiative - Destination 2010 - designed to make this a premier metropolitan university and a destination campus for the West. Current students, as well as future students, will benefit from the changes and improvements to our academic program, student services and facilities. Included in the planning is a new Science and Space Center with a state-of-the-art planetarium. Also in the works are a large student recreation center, an arena and stadium upgrades within our Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex. The city of Sacramento is one of the state's most affordable big cities, and the area has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The region's mild climate, rivers and nearby recreation areas make it popular with outdoor enthusiasts. Popular attractions include the State Capitol building, the State Railroad Museum and the Crocker Art Museum. Within easy driving distance are San Francisco, the Napa and Sonoma valleys, the historic gold country and the Lake Tahoe region's ski slopes.
