| School mission: | Virginia Commonwealth University is a public research university located in Richmond, Virginia. A diverse, urban university, Virginia Commonwealth University offers its 32,284 students programs in the arts, business, education, engineering, government and public affairs, graduate school, humanities and sciences, mass communications, social work, world studies, medicine, allied health professions, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and public health. VCU is the fastest growing university in Virginia's higher education system. With more than $220 million a year in sponsored research funding, VCU is designated as a research university with high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation. Eighteen university - approved centers and institutes of excellence - involving faculty from multiple disciplines in public policy, biotechnology and health care discoveries support the University's research mission. Innovative collaborations between the schools and campuses create groundbreaking interdisciplinary programs and build strong networks of students, professors, researchers and community leaders. One example is VCU Life Sciences, a comprehensive undergraduate, graduate and doctoral program involving academic and medical facilities. Both campuses combined, Monroe Park Campus and MCV Campus, VCU consists of 140.6 acres. The Monroe Park Campus is in the heart of Richmond's Fan District. The MCV Campus, which houses VCU's prestigious health sciences programs and the VCU Medical Center, is located two miles east of the Monroe Park Campus. VCU employs over 18,000 and the total workforce consists of the University faculty, physicians, nurses, administrative and support staff. |
