Randolph-Macon College (R-MC) operates on a 4-1-4 academic calendar, meaning students spend each January taking a monthlong course, traveling abroad, performing research, or completing a short internship. Student athletes compete as the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets, NCAA Division III teams that are members of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. All students are required to live on the college’s campus in Ashland, Va. For road trips, Richmond is about 15 miles from campus and Washington, D.C. is 90 miles away. Notable alumni of Randolph-Macon College include U.S. Representative Randy Forbes and John Frazee, Jr., former president and chief operating officer of Sprint.

Founded in 1830, Randolph-Macon is a selective, co-educational liberal arts college ideally located in scenic Ashland, Virginia, just minutes north of Richmond, and 90 miles south of Washington D.C. The college is easily accessible off of Interstate 95, has an Amtrak station across from campus and is in close proximity to Richmond International Airport. With an enrollment of approximately 1200 students, the college achieves its mission of "developing the minds and character of its students" with a student-faculty ratio of 11:1 and an average class size of 15. The college's rigorous academic program prepares students for graduate school and a lifetime of changing careers and success in the real world. The college offers a vast choice of majors and minors, including new Asian Studies and Communication Studies majors, and a new Equestrian program. Qualified students can take advantage of a BS/MD joint degree program and early selection partnerships with three premier medical schools. A Four-Year Degree Guarantee program also promises freshmen, who meet basic requirements, that they will graduate within four calendar years or the college will wave tuition needed to complete their degree. R-MC's exceptional faculty are nationally recognized for their teaching excellence and highly regarded as experts in their field. The personal interaction between faculty and students create "unique moments of connection" that challenge students to maximize their potential and foster lifelong relationships. R-MC's wealth of national and international internships provides students with meaningful, real-world experiences. The has an active, engaged alumni body that offers students valuable networking opportunities, both while at R-MC and after graduation. Randolph-Macon's extensive international education program prepares students to study abroad for a semester or immerse themselves in another culture for one month during the college's unique January term (J-term) program. Each year, students travel to other countries with faculty members to each continent. Many track their adventures by submitting J-Term blogs that allow the reader to follow their month-long journeys and new areas of discovery. During J-term, students can also participate in an internship or other area of study. The Schapiro Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program supports more than 30 students each summer to conduct research with faculty on projects in the sciences and humanities. Students then share their findings with their peers and at national and international conferences with their faculty advisor. In April 2011, the college launched a $100 million capital campaign, Building Extraordinary, to support new academic, residential and athletic facilities, provide additional scholarships and endowed professorships. Andrews Hall, a 104-bed, suite style freshmen facility will be open for the 2011 entering class. A Randolph-Macon education is also affordable. The college offers a competitive financial aid program to include scholarships and grants; a significant percentage of applicants are eligible to receive some form of financial assistance. Randolph-Macon is a proud member of NCAA Division III, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and sponsors 16 intercollegiate sports with the addition of men's swimming. Many of its teams and students are nationally-ranked and have won national championships. The college also offers a healthy Greek Life system and provides dozens of student organizations from which to choose. A majority of students are actively engaged and participate in community service and outreach programs and have raised thousands of dollars for community organizations. Randolph-Macon College's Phi Beta Kappa Chapter received the organization's Triennial award for the most outstanding chapter at a liberal arts college in the United States. Randolph-Macon is also the oldest United Methodist Church-affiliated college in the nation. |
