| Mission | |
| School mission: | A leading Catholic university founded in 1870, St. John's is a dynamic, cosmopolitan learning community that prepares students to be ethical leaders in today's global society. Our mission springs from the intellectual and spiritual heritage of the Vincentian Fathers, who guide the University to this day. Following the example of St. Vincent de Paul, the 17th-century priest who pioneered service to the needy, the University encourages students to use their knowledge and skills to make our world a better place. St. John's offers more than 100 quality academic programs with innovative global studies options and high-tech resources. Students come from 44 states and 122 foreign countries. As freshmen, our students enjoy close connections with classmates and professors through Learning Communities. These themed clusters -- Leadership, Social Justice, Health and Wellness, Environmental -- allow like-minded freshmen to share activities, courses and faculty mentors. Freshman year also introduces students to St. John's wide variety of service opportunities. Many students participate in Academic Service-Learning -- extensive course-related volunteer activities that build confidence and leadership. Through Campus Ministry, students also serve at soup kitchens, donate time to nonprofit organizations and participate in winter and spring plunges that assist the needy in New Orleans, Florida, Europe and Central America. St. John's innovative new Ozanam Scholars Program is a selective, four-year amalgam of academics and service. Receiving $10,000 annual scholarships, students work closely with professors, community leaders and experts to address issues of poverty and injustice. St. John's is a metropolitan and international university, with three beautiful, residential campuses in New York City; a location in Oakdale, NY; a campus in Rome, Italy; and a learning center in Paris, France. At our New York campuses, freshmen use the city as a living textbook through core courses like Discover New York. Through our wide-ranging study abroad offerings, students spend a semester, winter or summer intersession at St. John's varied locations in Paris, Rome and other cities. Discover the World, a unique study abroad option, allows students to earn 15 credits living and learning in three foreign cities in a single semester. Since leadership demands strong communications skills, St. John's provides all students with one-on-one help with essays and other projects through our ultramodern Writing Center. All entering students receive their own laptop computer with full access to our award-winning wireless network. Also reflecting our focus on technology, St. John's recently completed a $20 million enhancement of science labs and multimedia classrooms. This focus on technology benefits other areas of campus life as well. For example, when students use a campus service, they swipe their ID card in a special processor so University representatives can check their satisfaction. Beyond the classrooms and laboratories, students enjoy a vibrant campus life. There are some 180 student clubs and organizations, along with St. John's Division I BIG EAST men's and women's athletic teams. |
