Mission
School mission: As a small, private liberal arts college, Hartwick College focuses on fostering collaborative student-faculty relationships: our faculty bring the latest insights from the world into the classroom to deepen student learning. The college's beautiful setting upon a hill overlooking Oneonta, New York features the close relationships expected from a small private liberal arts college of 1480 students with a student-to-faculty ratio of 12:1. Our Connecting the Classroom to the World philosophy puts an emphasis on experiential learning so that students are prepared to continuously shape and reshape their future. When our students study abroad, complete an internship, collaborate with a professor on a research project, or work in the local community, their learning translates into an education that changes lives. More than 60 percent of Hartwick students gain first-hand experience either studying off-campus or completing an internship. Hartwick's faculty lead off-campus programs all over the world during our January Term, which allows students to broaden their horizons. Our unique academic calendar, centered on the four week January Term, not only enables students to travel the world, but also offers opportunities to undertake a topic-focused class, do an internship, perform directed research, or complete a senior capstone project. Our nearby Pine Lake Environmental Campus has also provided residential and curricular opportunities for students to investigate the importance of sustainability since 1972. In contrast to the recent scramble among institutions to configure opportunities for experiential learning, Hartwick has been offering these core educational components to students for more than three decades. The entire Hartwick community, from academic to residential life and athletics, now embraces this longstanding commitment to experiential learning through our Connecting the Classroom to the World approach to a liberal arts education. Hartwick is excited to offer a Three-Year Bachelor's Degree, starting fall semester 2009. A unique and exciting opportunity allowing qualified students to benefit from our strong liberal arts education and special experiential learning opportunities. This program dramatically reduces the cost of a private college education. Students in the program can take advantage of every opportunity offered in our traditional four-year program.
