Mission
School mission: Founded in 1976, the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts is an intimate artistic community that attracts people who are most fully engaged when they are creating art, and who also want to be around people who love to draw, paint, and sculpt. Student life at this unique college of art centers around work in the studio, as well as work out in the natural surroundings of our community which facilitates an academy based teaching philosophy that is unique amongst art colleges. Over the years the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts has earned a reputation as a forerunner in contemporary Fine Arts higher education, "many in the art world believe the (Lyme) Academy has contributed to the renaissance of representational art." New York Times. Located in the artistic community of Old Lyme, Connecticut, the college is surrounded by one of the most beautiful, safe, and unspoiled areas in America, and is only two hours away from New York or Boston. Offering a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting or Sculpture, a Post Baccalaureate Degree and a three-year Certificate in Fine Arts, the Lyme Academy is the sole fine-arts-only art school accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The Academy is also accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the State of Connecticut, and also is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design and the Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges. The mission of the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts is to provide the best education in Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture through study of the history, traditions, and principles of the fine arts and the Liberal Arts & Sciences, thereby establishing a comprehensive foundation for the development of the artist. With an enrollment of around 200 students, the Lyme Academy College is an intimate artistic community. Ninety five percent of our classes have less than twenty students. Our student-to-faculty ratio is twelve to one, which facilitates an academy based teaching philosophy. The Academy's location offers particular advantages for the study of art amongst art colleges, since Old Lyme has been a colony for painters since the turn of the century. The luminosity of the Lyme landscape first attracted artists because of its resemblance to the light and landscape painted by the Impressionists in France, and it soon became a center for the American Impressionists. With its close proximity to both New York and Boston (two hours away) as well as convenient access to the major visual collections held by Yale University, the Wadsworth Athenaeum, and The New Britain Museum of American Art, not to mention The Florence Griswold Museum just down the street, our art school offers a wide range of artistic opportunities. The curriculum is based on a respect for traditional forms of teaching, which have produced master artists throughout the ages. The studio curriculum is centered around the study of nature and the human figure. The liberal arts curriculum provides a strong academic foundation necessary for advanced critical and creative thought. Together the integrated program is designed to provide a practical foundation on which each student can develop his or her intellectual and visual articulation with confidence and integrity at a unique College of Art.
