Northeastern Illinois University is a school in Chicago that offers a summer transition program for first year students entering from high school. This six-week program consists of academic classes in the morning, and then workshops, recreational activities, and counseling in the afternoons. Students at Northeastern Illinois University can choose from more than 70 fields of study, including master’s degree programs in the Department of Counselor Education. Adult learners with busy schedules can earn a bachelor’s degree through the school’s Nontraditional Degree Programs, which feature flexible class times.

The university, often abbreviated as NEIU, offers more than 70 student organizations, as well as Greek life and student government. Students can also explore campus media through The Independent newspaper, Que Ondee Sola magazine, and the WZRD school radio station. Student athletes can play sports at the intramural and club level and work out in the fitness center. Notable NEIU alumni include Luis V. Gutierrez, the first Latino from the Midwest to be elected to Congress.

Unique to Northeastern's mission are the two distinctive features of diversity and community partnerships. The location of the University also provides students and faculty with many opportunities to integrate field-based learning, research, and services with classroom instruction. Study abroad programs provide Northeastern students with a unique opportunity to spend a semester, summer, or academic year overseas while earning credit at NIEU towards graduation. NEIU is easy to get to via public transportation. Average class size is 20. NEIU is committed to providing an affordable education - we are among the most affordable of the Illinois public universities. We offer Tuition Guarantee Program that offers incoming students the same tuition rate for six years.
