Mission
School mission: NYSID is New York's only private, not-for-profit college dedicated solely to interior design education. With over 700 students it is the largest program in New York but retains a small-college atmosphere with a student-faculty ratio of 10 to 1. NYSID's student body is rich in diversity, with some studying full-time and others part-time; with some of traditional college age and others career changers, with international students and those from states across the country. The college offers two undergraduate degree programs: the professional level 132-credit Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design, and the pre-professional 66-credit Associate in Applied Science in Interior Design. Both degree programs, in conjunction with the requisite work experience, prepare graduates to sit for the NCIDQ exam leading to state certification. A 24-credit non-degree certificate program, Basic Interior Design, is offered for those who need to develop a portfolio in order to apply to an undergraduate degree program, or for those seeking personal enrichment and entry-level job opportunities in interior design. The undergraduate degree programs combine professional courses, design history and the liberal arts so that graduates have the skills and education to meet the demands of this global profession. The post-professional Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design is a full-time 60-credit program for those who have undergraduate degrees in architecture, interior design, or related fields. The five-story academic building, located in the Upper East Side Historic District of Manhattan, includes a cafe, student center, and gallery for the exhibition of student work, a well-stocked bookstore, an auditorium equipped with video and digital projection for lectures and public programs, light-filled studios, an atelier for independent work equipped with computers and a materials collection, CAD classrooms, a unique lighting laboratory, and an exceptional design library. The administration building includes a street-level gallery which is the site for exhibitions related to interior design, architecture, and the decorative arts, as well as the annual MFA and BFA Thesis Exhibition. With its great location, superb facilities, distinguished faculty, as well as its challenging and comprehensive residential and contract curriculum, NYSID is the premier place to study interior design.
