Mission
School mission: Long considered one of the nation's strongest regional colleges, Muskingum College's enthusiasm for the future has never been stronger. With the completion of the new 23,000 square-foot Walter K. Chess Center; the addition of Philip and Betsey Caldwell Hall (which houses the speech, theatre and electronic journalism programs); and the current construction of Otto and Fran Walter Hall to house the College's music program, Muskingum College is experiencing continued growth. Offering 48 undergraduate and interdisciplinary majors, including Engineering Science, Nursing and Digital Media Design; nine preprofessional programs, three master's degree programs, including the Master of Information Strategy, Systems and Technology; and the Muskingum Adult Program, the College serves the eastern-central Ohio community and beyond. Muskingum is a friendly place where people feel comfortable -- where the focus is on the individual, both inside and outside of the classroom. But Muskingum is more than a collection of individuals, it's a community in every senses of the word. The College's mission is to develop -- intellectually, spiritually, socially and physically -- whole persons, by fostering critical thinking, positive action, ethical sensitivity and spiritual growth. Muskingum meets students where they are, helping each to discover his or her own potential. Small class sizes and the personal attention of an exceptional and dedicated faculty create an atmosphere of success and achievement. Learning at Muskingum is a hands-on experience. Most classes are interactive discussions rather than lectures. Muskingum students have the chance to work with peers and their professors. And, if the student is so inclined, he or she can take advantage of international exchange programs, the Washington Semester or year-round internships. Founded in 1837 by Presbyterians or Scotch-Irish descent, Muskingum continues to be associated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and take its church-relatedness very seriously, offering courses in religion and philosophy and a full complement of religious-life programming. Muskingum College's strong commitment to the region is exemplified by strong partnerships throughout the country, including its role as a catalyst for economic development and tourism. The College sponsors national conferences, the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra, a televised high school quiz bowl, arts and science festivals for school children, and scores of athletic and cultural events. The College is the alma mater of a number of distinguished and pioneering alumni, including William Rainey Harper, who founded the University of Chicago, and astronaut and U.S. Senator John H. Glenn. At a recent Muskingum College commencement, the graduating class student representative talked about Muskingum's uniqueness with these words: "Muskingum has always been a small liberal arts college. Despite this amount of former graduates, compared to larger universities, Muskingum has produced a Senator and astronaut, Senator John Glenn, as many people know. But Muskingum has also provided the United States with an Ambassador to Mexico and an editor of the Wall Street Journal. Muskingum has produced a vice-president or president of the three largest corporations in the world: a former chairman and CEO of Ford Motor Company; an executive vice-president of AT&T, and a vice-president for General Motors. The list could go on and on...What mark will we have put on Ohio, the United States, and the world? It is the same challenge that previous Muskingum graduates have had and they have gone beyond all expectations."
