The United States Naval Academy is located in Annapolis, Md., at the intersection of the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay, approximately 33 miles east of Washington, D.C. It is the second oldest of the five federal service academies. Students, known as midshipmen, are officers in training and their tuition is fully funded by the U.S. Navy in return for an active-duty service obligation after graduation. The Navy has NCAA Division I intercollegiate varsity sports and competes primarily in the Patriot League. Navy is known for its longstanding football rivalry with Army. Midshipmen must meet certain physical education requirements during all four years in order to graduate. The school offers more than 90 extracurricular activities for midshipmen, from the chess club to the triathlon club, among others. All midshipmen live in Bancroft Hall, a huge dormitory complex, and receive a monthly stipend.
The United States Naval Academy graduates earn a Bachelor in Science degree and go on to serve in the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps. Applicants must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a congressional representative. A traditional event on campus is the Ring Dance, when Second Class Midshipmen receive their class rings. Notable alumni include former U.S. President Jimmy Carter; astronaut Alan Shepard, the first American in space; U.S. Senator John McCain; NASA Administrator Charles Bolden; and former presidential candidate Ross Perot.

The United States Naval Academy is a demanding four year program leading to a bachelor of science degree and a commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy or as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. The mission of the United States Naval Academy is as follows: To develop midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government. |
