Mission
School mission: Central Michigan University is helping shape Michigan's future and preparing graduates for careers in a global economy. With 27,354 students, it is Michigan's fourth largest public university, offering students a choice of more than 200 academic programs at the bachelor's, master's, specialist's, and doctoral levels. CMU's Mount Pleasant, Michigan, campus enrolls over 20,000 students, while CMU's Off-campus Program enrolls nearly 7,000 students at 60 locations throughout Michigan and across the nation. Among Off Campus students, 36 percent are from generally underrepresented groups. CMU ranks 16th nationwide in master's degrees awarded to underrepresented students. Founded in 1892, CMU today offers many reputable programs, including health, communications, humanities, and teacher education programs. In the field of health care, CMU's audiology, physician assistant, and speech-language pathology programs rank among the top 60 in the nation and top five in Michigan. CMU's academic distinctions include many renowned programs and professors. CMU's nationally ranked clinical psychology programs are recognized widely throughout Michigan in many fields, including research being conducted in the Driving Evaluation, Education, and Research (DEER) Center. CMU's new neuroscience doctoral program and associated Brain Research And Integrative Neuroscience (BRAIN) Center are supporting research into cures for neurodegenerative diseases. CMU chemists and physicists, working with the CMU Research Corporation and select graduate students enrolled in a new Science of Advanced Materials doctoral program, are breaking new ground in control-release drug delivery and next-generation nanotechnology circuits. Other noted CMU programs include athletic training, entrepreneurship, broadcast and cinematic arts, music, and educational leadership. CMU is ranked among the top 20 most productive research universities in the nation among universities in its class, according to Academic Analytics and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. CMU faculty members always prioritize teaching along with student involvement in their research and creative endeavors. During the last decade, three CMU faculty members have received the prestigious Michigan Professor of the Year award from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement and the Support of Education. CMU athletes are accomplished in the field and the classroom. The university's Division I Mid-American Conference student/athletes have earned the MAC Academic Achievement Award for best cumulative GPA 10 of the last 11 years. During the same period, Chippewa teams have won 33 MAC titles in 13 of 16 sports over, including the 2006 and 2007 MAC football championships. Above all, CMU provides a caring community that encourages students to become involved in active learning, leadership, research, and service. More than 60 percent of CMU students roll up their sleeves and volunteer during their time at CMU, and half of freshmen complete leadership training in preparation for related experiences through CMU's nationally recognized Leadership Institute and associated leadership minor. Today, many of the university's 166,000 living alumni remain closely connected to their alma mater, expressing their loyalty in gifts of treasure, service, and involvement. Among the university's alumni are actor Jeff Daniels, former U.S Army Chief of Staff General Peter John Schoomaker, and John Grogan, author of The New York Times Best-seller 'Marley & Me' an endearing story and major movie (late 2008) about his Labrador Retriever.
