Mission
School mission: Based in Vermont, Woodbury College was founded thirty years ago with a mission to demystify the law. In a state known for its commitment to civil society, harmonious problem solving, and cutting-edge developments in sustainable business, Woodbury specializes in adult education and is known as the "law and mediation college." We're proud to have introduced paralegal education, our unique pre-law program, and our path-breaking program in alternative dispute resolution. Our passion is educating non-lawyers about the law, because in a highly-regulated world dependent on its rule, law is too important to be understood by only a few specialists. We see the law not as a set of rules but a set of tools - tools to improve your work and enhance your career. Instructors are practicing professionals who are passionate about working with adults to help them prepare for rewarding careers and active participation in their communities. We are committed to offering a challenging but supportive and respectful learning environment that includes convenient weekend, evening, hybrid and online courses and low-residency programs for busy adults. Woodbury College offers undergraduate programs in the areas of legal studies, pre-law and advocacy. Woodbury also offers a Master of Science in Mediation and Applied Conflict Studies, and a Master of Science in Law (MSL) degree. The MSL program was created to help professionals who are not lawyers think and act confidently in the legal dimensions of their work, prevent needless litigation, and work productively with counsel when counsel is necessary. Woodbury College's programs are based on competencies - real career skills for the real world. Each learning activity helps students build specific areas of professional skill and competency. The members of the Woodbury faculty create an environment for practical, experiential learning in classes designed to be small. Instructors evaluate progress through a variety of activities including formal essays, reflection papers, oral and written reports, standard documents of the field, panel discussions, role plays, group work, and participation in class discussions. We offer ongoing written and oral feedback on your progress in attaining these competencies. Woodbury graduates play essential roles in government, nonprofit activity, and the private sector. One graduate is now a Vermont Supreme Court Justice, another is director of the state Human Rights Commission, and a third is a family court judge. Other alumni are mainstays of the research departments of Vermont's largest law and insurance firms, advocates for children and families, coordinators of community justice programs, and mediators and consultants in private practice.
