Mission
School mission: Located seven miles outside Boston, Tufts is a university of 10,000 students that uses the intellectual framework of the liberal arts and engineering to serve the common good. Globalism, active citizenship and environmentalism are multidisciplinary themes that link over 60 academic programs in the School of Arts & Sciences and the School of Engineering, the University's two undergraduate programs. With a 7:1 student-faculty ratio and an average class size of 20, the undergraduate curriculum at Tufts is writing and discussion-intensive. Tufts prepares leaders who will address the great intellectual and social challenges of the new century, people who want to interpret new information and make a difference in people's lives. An emphasis on critical reasoning, a creative approach to problem-solving, and emotional and social intelligence enables students to question, appreciate, and understand information and trends in a fast-paced, multicultural environment. Tufts offers rigorous, cutting-edge programs in fields as diverse as international relations, biomedical engineering, community health, environmental studies, neuroscience and cognitive studies, to name a few. Liberal arts candidates gain broad academic proficiency as well as proficiency in second language while engineers are trained to be technically-skilled as well as highly literate as they examine the societal impact of technology.
