| School mission and unique qualities (as provided by the school): | |
|
The Mission of McGill University is the advancement of learning through teaching, scholarship and service to society: by offering to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students the best education available; by carrying out scholarly activities judged to be excellent when measured against the highest international standards; and by providing service to society in those ways for which we are well-suited by virtue of our academic strengths. McGill is building on its history of breaking the boundaries between academic disciplines and finding common ground among students and faculty representing wide cross sections of nations and cultures, to play a leadership role in international teaching and research. We are making measurable progress towards our goal to stand unambiguously among the world's top-ten public universities. McGill students were awarded more national prizes than their peers at any other university in Canada over the past six years and have attracted more Rhodes scholarships than any other Canadian university. Our graduates include astronauts, presidents and prime ministers, Oscar, Tony and Grammy winners, and superstar professors, researchers, university deans and presidents, and business leaders around the world. Our faculty, more often than not, attracts the highest amount of peer-reviewed research funding per full-time professor of any Canadian university and outperformed all other Canadian universities and many top-ranked American universities in the competition for Sloan Research Fellows over the past two years. We are building on the historic strength of our academic departments and current interdisciplinary programs and establishing new initiatives in strategically critical areas such as the neurosciences, biomedical engineering, regenerative medicine, pain management, the development of new advanced (and non-polluting) materials and technologies, agricultural and environmental development, information technology, cross-cultural and multi-lingual studies and other emerging areas. |
