Mission
School mission: One of the nation's finest Catholic liberal arts colleges, Saint Anselm College, was founded in 1889 by Benedictine monks, whose tradition of leadership in education spans more than 15 centuries. This strong and ageless influence helps foster an unmatched educational environment. Saint Anselm is located on a hilltop overlooking Manchester, N.H., within an hour of the seacoast, Boston, the White Mountains, and New Hampshire's Lakes Region. Saint Anselm has an outstanding academic reputation and is ranked among the Best 368 Colleges by the Princeton Review. Dedicated to excellence in undergraduate education, the College is noted for its challenging academic curriculum that includes its nationally recognized Humanities Program, Portraits of Human Greatness. This foundation of our core curriculum challenges students to ponder not only the works of our civilizations great men and women, but the people themselves, their values and interests, their decisions and development. In doing so, Saint Anselm offers a learning experience that not only exposes students to the vast array of human knowledge and understanding, but also helps prepare them to make their own informed choices. The Teagle Foundation, which supports colleges and universities, recently asked institutions across the country how many of them deal with the big questions concerned that such questions may have been eclipsed by a narrowed focus on career preparation. This is the great Saint Anselm difference. The big questions have always been our focus. We inspire students to lead creative and generous lives, sustained by an intellectual curiosity that engages them in perennial pursuit of the Truth. Guiding students to lead meaningful and balanced lives is also part of our mission and reflected in our many extra-and co-curricular options. The Meelia Center for Community Service and the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, for example, together offer more than 50 different opportunities for students to become civically engaged and globally informed. Named one of the country's Colleges with Conscience by The Princeton Review, Saint Anselm shapes the kind of leader the world is hungry for; not only smart, but good. Through the Meelia Center for Community Service, Saint Anselm College mobilizes student talent and energy to assist 14 community partnerships and more than 30 other community service agencies throughout Greater Manchester. Annually, some 850 students, faculty, and staff volunteer more than 16,000 community service hours. Every four years, New Hampshire serves as a magnet to politicians and the press as the nation's first presidential primary unfolds. The New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College is right in the middle of it all, hosting presidential hopefuls and providing a backdrop for American democracy in action. Over the past 40 years, hundreds of Presidential aspirants have delivered policy speeches at Saint Anselm College. We have also hosted numerous Presidential debates. These events have afforded the Saint Anselm College students the unique opportunities to participate in American democracy. Some of the candidates who have talked politics at Saint Anselm College have gone on to become American presidents, including the last seven. Saint Anselm and the Institute have become a must stop for the campaigns, providing what The Washington Post calls a box seat on America's most riveting political theatre. The Institute sponsors speakers, panels, workshops, and conferences headlined by leaders from government, business, and media. Many distinguished visitors teach in classrooms, meet with students, and dine with the campus community.
