LSUS was established in 1967. LSUS held its first session on September 21, 1967. LSUS held its first graduation ceremony in 1972, for the first LSUS graduates. LSUS has a current student population of 4,230, and has seen over 73,000 students pass through its doors. LSUS has an annual impact on the Shreveport-Bossier City metropolitan area economy of over $46 million. LSUS has one of the highest percentages of faculty with terminal degrees (83%). LSUS has the lowest student/teacher ratios (19 to 1) of any public university in Louisiana. LSUS faculty and staff have generated over $20 million in grants in the past five years. LSUS's Noel Memorial Library has 250,000 volumes, 2,000 journals and 300 online electronic databases in its main collection. LSUS is home to the first U.S. Olympic Committee-sponsored USA Weightlifting Development Center.
