| Mission | |
| School mission: | California State University, Los Angeles is home to the critically-acclaimed Luckman Jazz Orchestra and to a unique university center for gifted students as young as 12. Among programs that provide exciting enrichment opportunities to students and community include a noted alternative energy technology initiative; an NEH- and Rockefeller-supported humanities center; a NASA-funded center for space research; and a growing forensic science program, to be housed in the Los Angeles Regional Crime Lab due to open later this year. The state-of-the-art crime lab will house the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department and the California State University, Los Angeles School of Criminal Justice and Criminalistics. Also included in the facility will be the California Forensic Science Institute and California Criminalistics Institute. This project is a testament to the cooperative and collaborative efforts of the City and County and State agencies in developing this unique facility for the citizens of Los Angeles. Grants from the W.M. Keck Foundation and National Institutes of Health funded the University's new superconducting nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer-highly important in studying molecular structures of organic compounds. With the aid of this state-of-the-art equipment, professors and students will be able to conduct in-depth investigations, placing Cal State L.A. at the forefront of chemical/biological molecular research. |
