All LIM College students are required to complete a Senior Co-op during the last semester, when they spend at least 28 hours a week at their internship site. LIM - The College for the Business of Fashion, is the only college in the U.S. that focuses exclusively on the business side of the fashion industry. This four-year, private college does not teach clothing design or the arts, it teaches the business of what goes on behind the runway and how to succeed in those fields. Careers in buying, retail management, showroom management, marketing, magazines and merchandising are some of the paths graduates can take. LIM has been educating future fashion executives since 1939, and historically more than 90 percent of LIM students are working in their field within six months of graduation. LIM is housed in several buildings in the heart of the fashion industry, on or near Fifth Avenue in midtown Manhattan. It is just steps from some of the world's most famous shops, including Tiffany, Saks and Cartier. LIM has developed partnerships with the industry's major players, so that hands-on experience via internships is a primary component of an LIM education. The college partners with Bloomingdales, Oscar de la Renta, Gucci, MTV, Versace, Nicole Miller and many other leading companies to give students exposure to the inner workings of the industry. Students are required to do three internships during their four years. Freshmen and sophomores do one five-week internship and seniors spend their final semester working at their internship four days per week with one day in class. Numerous field trips to fashion-related companies and guest speakers also get students behind the scenes and give them access to the talented people who run the fashion industry. The student who will do best at LIM understands that fashion is a fast-paced, intense business that requires dedication and hard work. Students who are not afraid to jump in and take advantage of the doors that are opened for them will find a personalized, supportive environment that will help them succeed. Of the approximately 1,500 students enrolled as of Fall 2010, almost all are pursuing Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degrees in Fashion Merchandising, Marketing, Management or Visual Merchandising. An Associate degree program in Fashion Merchandising is also offered. Students may choose to live in campus housing in New York's Upper East Side/Yorkville area. Students who aren't sure if LIM is right for them can attend summer or Saturday classes for high school students on such topics as buying, styling and fashion show production to get a feel for what the business of fashion is all about. |
