Mission
School mission: Florida Southern College is a private, comprehensive college committed to educational excellence with a strong liberal arts core and professional programs, with more than 50 majors and distinctive graduate programs in business administration, education, and nursing. Florida Southern has a 12:1 student/faculty ratio, is a national leader in engaged learning, and is committed to the development of the whole student through vibrant classes and student life programs that prepare graduates to make a positive, consequential impact on society. The College boasts 26 NCAA Division II national championships. Located on scenic Lake Hollingsworth, Florida Southern is home to the world's largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. Engaged learning at Florida Southern refers to a range of pedagogical practices involving students as active, creative participants in dynamic active learning opportunities such as student-faculty collaborative research and performance, service learning, study abroad, internships, and practica. Every student is guaranteed an internship, and 94% of graduates land great jobs in their fields or pursue graduate study within three months of graduation. Examples of student-faculty collaborative research abound at the College. For example, business students created a marketing plan for Chevrolet that was presented to the company's top executives; computer science and math students developed software to create robots to enhance student learning and designed educational software; accounting students published groundbreaking research on identity theft in the peer-reviewed Journal of Business Issues; and horticultural science students worked with an internationally renowned professor to develop virus-free strains of roses. With world-class facilities and distinguished professors, the 250 students in the fine and performing arts fields produce remarkable performances, intern with artists in New York and nationwide, and attain their first-choice jobs and admission to top graduate programs. Students marketed, staged, and performed the well-known opera Don Giovanni alongside Metropolitan Opera stars. Their performances and gallery exhibitions enhance cultural life throughout the nation. The FSC music program is nationally recognized for stellar performance instruction. Our students are also service-oriented, logging more than 10,000 hours of community service annually. Seventy percent of Florida Southern students volunteer for more than 25 local not-for-profit organizations and government agencies including Big Brothers, Big Sisters; Center for Independent Living; Habitat for Humanity; Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine; Salvation Army; and Volunteers in Service to the Elderly. Nearly fifty percent of FSC students study abroad during the summer, and this year's offerings include programs in Austria, China, Costa Rica, England, France, Spain, and Viet Nam. Semester programs are offered in England, Mexico, Northern Ireland, and Spain. Students enrolled in May Option for the international business and international financial management courses will study multinational and local corporations in China for three weeks. Florida Southern is rapidly becoming well known for its successful engaged learning approach to education. The Princeton Review included the College for inclusion in the 2009 edition of its college guide, "The Best 368 Colleges," and the Fiske Guide ranks FSC one of only 26 private "Best Buy" colleges in the nation.
