| School mission: | Major Functions: The major function of the institution is teaching with research activities being conducted as a complement to the instructional program. Public service is an important function of the institution as it attempts to impact the economic and cultural development of the region. Institutional research activities provide important data to be used in the planning and development of effective instructional programs, viable student support services, and adequate physical resources. Through public service activities, the University provides valuable professional and material resources to the community, ranging from the individual involvement of university faculty and staff to structured programs in continuing education, social awareness, and recreation. Skills And Attitudes to Be Acquired Developed by Students: Mississippi Valley State University considers itself to be an agent of change for the students who attend it. In addition to its role in the academic preparation of students, the University attempts to affect change in the students' social attitudes and behaviors in order that they may be prepared for positive and competitive interaction in the greater society. MVSU aims to produce graduates who can write, speak, think, and calculate at an effective level in our society, and who achieve sufficient depth of understanding and skill in their major field to find employment, continue graduate study, or become contributing members of society. In view of the adverse economic circumstances that impact the vast majority of its students, the University expects that the experiences it provides will result in an improvement in the students' social and economic status. The principal institutional goals supporting the Mission are as follows: Provide educational programs and services designed to serve students who can move at an accelerated pace, students who have adequate prior preparation, and students who are educationally deficient in their prior preparation; Produce graduates who can write, speak, think, and calculate at a functional level in our society; and who achieve sufficient depth of understanding and skill in their major field to find employment, continue graduate study, or become contributing members of society in some other way; Provide a broad range of student services that include counseling, career planning, placement, and financial assistance; Maintain a faculty that is excellent in teaching and that has some public service interest; Maintain a campus that has an inviting environment; and Be service-orientated and responsive to the educational and cultural needs of the community. |
