Big Picture
I believe Iowa State is just the right size. There are enough students from many backgrounds that you can surround yourself with the kind of people you want to. There are also many opportunities at Iowa State University, from intramurals to clubs to Greek organizations to volunteer opportunities - the list could go on forever! For fun, I am taking Taekwondo and Hapkido this semester - how cool is that?! I know at a smaller school these choices for classes would not be available. I have also taken advantage of the study abroad and National Student Exhange opportunities offered at Iowa State. Lots of times, smaller schools do not have these options either. I am extremely please with my experience at Iowa State University, and I believe it is the perfect size for anyone who wants countless opportunities.
Academic Life
Like I said above, I love the Taekwondo and Hapkido classes I am taking this semester. Master Pak is the best kept secret at Iowa State. Not only do students learn new skills and how to protect themselves, we are learning the meaning of perseverance (very physically challenging!), respect (everyone is a "sir" or a "ma'am"), commitment (if you don't come to class, you aren't going to get better - we always encourage each other to stick with it), and self-control (you can't try your new moves on everyone you meet!). These classes are so much fun and a great change of pace from the normal biology or engineering or design classes you have to take every day! I am so glad I got the opportunity to experience something new during my time at Iowa State.
Student Body
I do not think any kind of student would feel out of place at Iowa State! Like I said before, there are so many opportunities for everyone here. We have a great Student Government if anyone is interested in politics and having a say in the University's decisions, multicultural Greek organizations, LGBT clubs, diversity groups, hip-hop club, Future Families of America, and many more! The student body is very accepting of all sorts of views and backgrounds. I honestly believe anyone who spent any time on campus would feel completely comfortable and accepted.
The Best Things
The many opportunities available if you take them.
The Worst Things
Not near too close to a big city, but that's not always a bad thing.
