Mission
School mission: Founded in 1860, Simpson College is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Simpson combines the best of a liberal arts education with outstanding career preparation and extracurricular programs. More than 40 majors, minors, and pre-professional programs are offered. With a student to faculty ratio of 14:1, students have the opportunity to work closely with their professors. Simpson professors are dedicated to their fields of study and equally dedicated to teaching - and it shows in the classroom. When this type of dedication and passion is combined with well-prepared and motivated students, the potential for success is virtually unlimited. Faculty, staff, and students work to create an environment that promotes learning through open discussion, mutual respect, and academic excellence, along with a sense of shared community. Extra curricular activities at Simpson are designed to supplement and reinforce the academic program and contribute toward a total learning experience. Activities range from an award-winning music program to nationally recognized NCAA Division III teams. Students may participate in student government, campus publications, religious life, music, theatre, residence hall organizations, departmental clubs, and various other organizations. Simpson has seven Greek chapters on campus, including three national fraternities, one local fraternity, and three national sororities. Simpson competes in nineteen intercollegiate sports and has an extensive intramural program. Outstanding facilities are continually enhanced and updated, including the state-of-the-art Carver Science Center, named after Simpson's most distinguished alumnus, George Washington Carver. Simpson's location - 12 miles from Des Moines, Iowa's capital city - places students within minutes of excellent internships and first-class entertainment. The 4-4-1 academic calendar includes a May Term that provides students with unique learning opportunities in the classroom, in internship settings, or studying abroad. Simpson's beautiful 85 acre, tree-lined campus provides a setting that nurtures creativity, energy, and productivity.
